ESJP COMMITMENTS
The 13th annual Engineering, Social Justice and Peace conference celebrates the commitment that the University of San Diego and the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering have made through their RED (Revolutionizing Engineering Departments) program to support the development of engineering students who are “changemakers” for social justice, economic development and sustainability on a global scale.
ESJP 13
As with all our meetings, ESJP 13 will be interdisciplinary by design. We welcome those who are able to help deconstruct our historical and current engineering practices, as well as those who are interested to work together to build alternatives. We welcome educators who wish to learn how to bring social justice to their engineering classes, together with those who are already doing so. We welcome students who wish to be socially just engineers in the future. We welcome in fact anyone, from inside or outside of academia, who values our commitments and wishes to join us on our journey.
Conference sessions will all be engaged activities and discussions - there will be no formal talks or papers. We will also visit local community programs to see engineering and social justice in action.

Interactive paper presentations on topics including Fostering Change through Engineers Without Borders, Reflections on Engineering Exchanges at University College London, and Interdisciplinary Problem-based Learning at Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

A panel discussion on Engineering through a Peacebuilding Lens moderated by Jerry McCann.

Visits to Friendship Park on the US/Mexico border hosted by Border Angels, and to a Kumeyaay community for a discussion about STEAM education and Native American students.

Workshops presented by Jon Leydens and Juan Lucena on applying Engineering for Social Justice in diverse instructional and research contexts, and discussion by Gwen Ottinger on identifying factors that enable engineering work that prioritizes social justice and peace.

$275 per registrant - standard registration includes lunch daily, dinner Thursday evening and conference materials. Breakfast and additional dinners not included.

$150 per registrant - discounted registration for all student participants and others who are not supported by their institution. Fee includes same as standard registrant.
If you are a local community member working on a project related to engineering, social justice, and peace, please contact the conference organizers for information about no-cost participation.

Lodging is not included in the registration fee.
The conference organizers recommend the Hilton Garden Inn Old Town because of its location and access to USD and downtown San Diego.
